Change of Injector's hoses

Already, a lot of XJ-S listers had to do the job. Very easy in fact and can be done in the street and not so dirty. ... But not for smokers !

What's needed:

Hight quality 8 mm gas injector hose: about 10-15cm per hose.

Be caful not to buy low quality ones: I did it and the hose breaks and put fire in the hood. Jaguar's injector hose must be stronger than the ones that are used in the french cars. Where to find it: try to buy it at Jaguar dealer (40$ for 1 meter).

New clamps in good quality to replace the ones witch looks strange. (Personally I change 2 big ones between the fuel rails others for injectors hoses were OK. But it's a waste of time to stop the job because you need the 3$ hardware ! )

By the way, it could be great to change the plugs (NGK BR 7EF for my pre-HE "Made to Jaguar specification": #PJM 449) at the same time: with the injectors out, it's far easier ! (I have to say that changing plugs could be as long as changing hoses of the injectors !)

A injector is worth more than 100$ in Switzerland, to change the hoses for the 12 cylinders cost less than 50$ and need 3 hours of work for beginners ( 1.5 hour for the second time !). If you go to a jag shop in Geneva, you need about 4 hours of futile debate because your cat do not come from his shop ! Any way all jag dealers have to order injector: no stock for customers !.

How to proceed:

Part I

Wash your car or use old pant. Find a good parking place. Stop smoking !
Start the engine and stop the engine by removing the contact of the pump relay. There are 2 relays in the boot: on the right side of the boot. Where the gas cap should be if the gas trap was on the right side ! So no gas, no running engine !
Then put out the contact key.

If you are not sure which one is the pump relay : don't worry both cut the gas. Personally I just cut the inertial switch inside the car, you get 10 cc of gas more when you remove the gas rails.

Then disconnect the long linkage for the butterfly commands (need 2 x 8 mm key)
Unscrew

the 12 clamps of the injectors hoses
the 24 nuts of the injectors carriers (need 11 mm key)
clamps for the hose to the air-line tube between manifold
clamps between fuel rails. At this time gas will escape from the rail so use old T-shirts to collect the 0.1 liter of gas.

Spin the hoses between the gas rail to move to right or left to disconnect them.
Then verify all gas hoses are out (in fact you can let the injectors clamped to the rail for transportation to your kitchen.

In fact, it is faster to take all the 12 injectors than only 6.
Take the rails and injectors out of the car. Turn it to let the gas escape.

Part II (in the kitchen)

Encourage your wife to meet a always speaking friend outside tonight and stop smoking!
Remove the injectors from the fuel rail.
Then you have to destroy the hose from the injector but not the special ring at the end !
To "remove-destroy" the hose, you will need cutters, knife, cutting-nippers of different type: with good and sharp tools one minute is long, with bad tools 2 hours is short (for one hose) Personally I use Ikebana cutters, I recieved from my japanees teacher, and need 2 minutes.
Cut the new 8 mm injector hose with a very sharp cutters and control the quality of the cut. Do not cut on the other hand now because it's easier to handle long tube to force.
Do not forget the ring on the injector then force the tube in. The ring should not be able to spin free from the hose. Did you succeed ? Personally I put out the hose of the first one only to be sure that it was very hard to put it out too !
Too hard ?! Then try this (needed: 1/2" and 3/4" tools):
Then cut the hose to the correct length.

Part III (back on the cat )

To fit it back is easy (reverse of what you did first), but few advises:

Cover the open holes of the injectors in the manifold if you want to clean the place or change the plugs now.
Do not screw the handle-plate to much (I broke one 2 months ago ! I taught that the leak will stop easily )
Verify that all the seal inside of the injectors holes are fitted.
Because of the electric connection, the injectors need to be fitted in correct direction. So screw the clamps and plates at the end only.
When you think that your job is finished, fit the pump relay on and the inertia switch on. Then turn the key without starting the engine: the pump will work, so verify that there is no leak because you forget to screw the clamp of the gas input or hoses between rails is not correctly fitted ! (Yes it happen to me !)
Then start the engine !
I hope you have good battery because 4 seconds of starters are needed to push the air out of the injectors hoses !
If your engine is running with vibrations, check the injections wires and plugs wires (24 wires)
Check after a little run and after long run too.
Take a bath, you smell gas and your wife just arrive.
